Incredible versions of fantastic pieces
Jean Guillou is an incredible performer and composer, but here we see a side of him that is quite impressive, transcriber. Here, he has taken the Russian masterpiece "Pictures at an Exhibition" and made it for the organ. The same range of color that one finds in the orchestral versions of Ravel, Stokowski, etc. is here, and then some. Performed by Guillou himself, the piece comes alive in a way never heard before. From the simple trumpet entry to the depths of agony in the Catacombs, to the exalted triumph of the Grand Gate of Kiev, Guillou's playing and registration are fantastic. As if that isn't enough to get you to buy this disc, listen to the second piece, also transcribed by Guillou: Rachmaninov's "Symphonic Dances." Here, transcribed for TWO organs, Guillou and follower Yanka Hekimova enter a fascinating realm of color and beauty unsurpassed. They play on two different consoles that control the same great organ at St. Eustache, and they are amazing. I recommend this disc for organ lovers, Guillou lovers, Rachmaninov/Mussorgsky lovers, and music lovers in general. You will not regret this disc, ever!
